Finding Fossils - Erosion can be your greatest friend
It's been a long time since I went out on a fossil hunt and on this day I took the opportunity to revisit an old quarry that in the past had brought me great surprises. It was in this quarry that I found the largest gastropods that were in my collection. I tryed to took advantage of the fact that in the previous months it rained a lot I went to see if the erosion had led to the discovery of more interesting things. I confess that I wasn't expecting such nice fossils...

Finding Fossils - Fort Hill Exploration
Переглядів 9235 місяців тому
The day dawned with no clouds in the sky, which anticipated what would become an excellent fossil hunt. I went in search of a place I had seen from Goggle Earth where it seemed to me that there were rocks exposed... upon arriving, I went to an area where I had already been for about a year ago, hoping to find even more fossils there, but the area had been completely cleaned and it was a little ...
Finding Fossils - Near an extinct Volcano
Переглядів 8975 місяців тому
I got up quite early and decided this time to visit the ancient volcanic complex, now extinct, here in the Lisbon area. I usually find fossils on the hills far from this one, howevere I never had visited this place and the result was a little unexpected since in a volcanic area what one would expect to find would be basaltic rock and not fossils. The volcano itself was a beautiful experience an...

Sometimes we think the odds are against us and we think it's practically impossible for something to happen. In reality, if it is possible, someday at some point it will happen and that is what happened on this day. My goal for this day was to go to a different unexplored area to see if I could find fossils of another type, however, I ended up getting distracted on the road that led to that are...

I've had very little time to make videos of fossil hunts, I've been going out and continuing my search for these traces of the past but I haven't had time to edit the videos. However, this day was different, because after years of searching I am getting closer and closer to the elusive fossil that persists in not being found. This was a very special day for me....

The rocks look like they were pushed or pulled in one direction by a flood and as they are spread ou...
Finding Fossils - Exploring the Hidden Fossilized Reef

It was a strange time to do a fossil hunt, however the absence of sun in early August is something that cannot be wasted because it makes research in the field much easier. I went to a well-known spot in the hopes that erosion had helped uncover more of the ancient fossilized reef. The result was excellent! Whenever I go to that place, rain or shine, there are always fossils everywhere. The que...

      It's really been a long time since my last adventure and I've only just managed to upload this new video now. I didn't give up, I just had less time to my usual fossil hunts, I still went out, but I didn't have the chance to make any videos... Making these UA-cam videos takes a lot of time in terms of editing and figuring out how the adventure will be told, which is the part I like least, the part I like most is the discovery heheh! But yes, It's all fine with me. Thank you very much for asking about me and thank you very much for the strength and support you have given.

    • @zejurassico
      @zejurassico 2 місяці тому

      To have less work, the ideal is to look on the slopes of the mountains or in excavations where you can see the stratification of the rocks. It's always a good starting point, sometimes I even investigate the sides of roads when they cut the hill to make the road pass. But be careful with passing cars.

    But What kind of rocks we must identify by find a lot fossils?

    • @zejurassico
      @zejurassico 2 місяці тому

      The best rocks to look for in fossils are sedimentary rocks, those in which we look and We can see layers as if they were layers of a cake, in theory only granitic and basaltic rocks are more difficult to have fossils in because they are of volcanic origin.

    Love your episodes, and I've been following you for years. Particularly enjoy your enthusiasm for your fossils and the Portuguese countryside. As your fossils are basically chalk I'm not surprised they crumble when wet! Very difficult for you to unearth without them breaking apart, especially if you need to use any force to remove them from clay or if they have been embedded in the road. Perhaps you might have a bit more success if you used archaeology tools? I know it would probably take longer to get them out, but it might be worth it. I feel so sorry for the disappointment in your voice when any of them break! I also love the display cases you are now using.

    Thank you again for the sunrise views of the local landscape,it was very beautiful! The second set of trace fossils you showed looked very much like 'mud cracks".That bed of rock possibly was deposited on a muddy sediment and the "mud cracks" were formed in the mud.The cluster of oysters were very nice !!! I noticed the beds dipping along the highway:it is ashamed you do have an associate that could use that localized structure working with the local geology and map out the same beds in another spot.Keep the enjoyable videos coming !!!👍👍👍

      I'm very happy that you liked the video Always try to include parts about the places that I visit, I find them interesting and they are extremely beautiful places, at least from my point of view. I had no idea that the rock in which I thought there were fossils was actually fossilized mud. What caught my attention was the curious aspect. I had come across the same pattern several times, but I always thought it was fossils without realizing what kind or what species would they be. The best thing about that place was, the side cut in the hill next to the highway. It allowed me to discover some bivalves but it was only when I left that I noticed that there was actually a barbwire that was completely destroyed and rolled up in the middle of the brambles... Olá. Na zona de Coimbra é mais provável de encontrares amonites. Há zonas, perto de pedreiras ( pede informações antes de andares por lá a escavar porque mesmo as desactivadas são perigosas) . Eu costumo pesquisar numa área bastante grande, mas maioritariamente na zona de Sintra e na zona de Sobral de Monte Agraço e por vezes até perto de Torres Vedras. Perto de Coimbra tens a zona de são Pedro de Moel que é bastante referida como sendo um sitio bem porreiro para encontrar fósseis. Tenho aqui algumas referencias ( embora nunca tenha ido para aí procurar fósseis) na zona de Taveiro, Casais de Vera Cruz, Liceia, ao pé do campo de futebol de Real Club de Brasfemes e em Montemor-o Velho.

    Great trip this time !! I really enjoyed seeing the echinoids you found-very beautiful ! That material you showed in the path at the first part of the video looked like shelfstone that has formed in a small cave.Glad to see the cephalopod you found.I know they must be very rare in those sediments.Can you tell me the Portuguese word that you used for the large limestone boulders,I would be interested in knowing what the English equivalent is.Thank you and keep the great videos coming (I can almost feel the fog in those wooded areas!!😄😄

      Hello my friend. I'm very happy that you liked the video. That area really is special and I have found very interesting things there, although most of what I find are large Harpagod gastropods. The Portuguese word for rock formations is: Lápias, the translation I found in English is Limestone Pavement.... I don't know if it's correct. The fossils are spectacular but the landscape is even better and walking there early in the morning is a fantastic experience.👍😊🦕🦕⛏

    You'd be a kid in a candy store around here with all the fossils I've seen laying on the ground.

    Welcome back. We will just keep waiting till you upload a video. Lovely find at long last. 🎉 👏 What's next on your wish list? Mine is a whole crinoid. Have lots of stem bits and a slab with a very feint impression with it's fond type top. Don't want to buy one, I would love to find one. 😊

      Thank you very much friend It took some time for me to upload videos on UA-cam but I've been very busy with my work this last year. On my wish list there is obviously an ammonite, but here it is very difficult to find one. Maybe this year I will be able to make that wish come true... Finding a fossil is always a fantastic experience, it would certainly be easier to buy something, but the experience of finding a fossil yourself is something unique and an adventure in itself.Thank you very much for your support and I'm very happy that you liked the video.😊👍👍🙏🦕🦖
